My Paris Kitchen: Galettes and Slaw

This post will likely be brief. I'm attempting to draft it on my phone. I hate typing on my phone, but I'm applying the same thought process to this post as I am to emails to my 2 dear long-distance friends who refuse to join Facebook (!!!). Namely, that I need to stop waiting until I find time to sit at the computer, because it'll never happen. Emails don't have to be comprehensive--just send SOMETHING. So, same with this. Currently writing this left-handed, while nursing, before managing to get downstairs for coffee, so if it's a series of lines of gibberish, I apologize.

Also, I don't have Lebovitz's book in front of me, so you'll have to buy the. book or head over to Cook the Book Friday's if you want details.

I made the slaw with garlic dressing two weeks ago, but never posted. I don't love slaw. Any slaw. This one was good, as far as it goes, but the leftovers languished in the fridge (and turned brown because of the apple.) I did enjoy the colors, as I used red cabbage, broccoli, and carrots. Didn't take a picture, though. Oops.

This week's recipe was for buckwheat crepes with ham, cheese, and eggs. I found them tricky to make, but delicious too eat. The baby is not compliant with on-the-spot cooking at the moment, and I grossly underestimated how long it would take the egg whites to set. I felt like u was standing at the stove an eternity while Oliver screamed from the other room. Also, by the time the eggs set, the crepe was crispy, and it was hard to fold the edges without snapping them off.

We enjoyed these, though I doubt I'll make them again until things slow down.

Odd. I DO have a photo, but the program isn't letting me access the pics on my phone. If I ever get to the computer, I'll add it.

  1. Good for you for posting your results anyway! I smiled at the image of you typing this all out. I think most of us had the same challenge with the galettes - crispy edges, non-cooperation. I thought they were yummy, but not sure that they'll get another chance.

  2. The fact that you are even trying to do this with a new baby is remarkable, I give you a lot of credit. Happy that you enjoyed the galettes.

  3. Dang, Ei! I'm super impressed you're posting and was just thinking about you the other day, hoping all is going well. Thank goodness for phones these days during the newborn phase, huh? I had the exact same problem with the galettes and my noisy-in-a-different-way 4-year-old was pretty ticked waiting for dinner. :)

  4. Yay for posting! NIce to see you here! I had the same issue with my galettes and I didn't have a newborn to deal with. Hats off to you!

  5. I hear ya. I don't have the baby excuse, but I also find it difficult to keep up with email correspondance and have simply started responding from wherever the heck I happen to be at the time, which means a lot more emails via my phone, for better or for worse... usually for the worse.

    Congrats on your new arrival.

  7. I am amazed you could even pull this week's recipe off. As my granddaughter says, "It's twicky." We all had the same problems that you expressed SO WELL on your phone. I couldn't possibly do that. I am enjoying all the photos of your new baby, especially the "smiles". You all seem to be adjusting well but you are probably short on sleep. I am very, very happy that you are keeping in touch with us and CtBF as you can. We don't care if you have photos or are sending us a few phone posts or whatever, we just enjoy hearing from you. Busy time at your house.

  8. My interest in making crêpes started with my daughter. She wanted to make them as she has learned to do at summer camp. Enjoy the baby. Children get you to go places you would never have imaged. Glad to read your post and the delicious food you made.

  11. Super impressed with your multi-tasking! I had the same issue too, with the egg taking a little longer to cook, making the crepe challenging to fold.

  13. Typing one handed is very hard. It's a lot to do when taking care of a newborn! Good for you! I agree that the galette was very tasty! Try to get some rest whenever you can!
