Keeping it brief today, because nothing about this week's French Fridays with Dorie recipe excited me much, before or after making it. Cheating-on-Winter Pea Soup is a quick soup made using frozen peas, and, for a twist, a head of romaine lettuce. I've made similar soups before, so I was surprised that no extra herbs were used to flavor Dorie's version. It could have used some oomph.
Thanks to warnings about a fellow Dorista's immersion blender shorting out when a piece of romaine tied up the blade, I chopped my romaine into a million pieces, and experienced no pyrotechnic malfunctions. Huzzah!
I'm pretty indifferent to this soup. I didn't dislike it, but I doubt I'll ever make it again. It made me want real pea soup, slow cooked with a ham bone and meat. First I need a ham...
I thought this was okay, but not terribly exciting. I was a little surprised at the lack of herbage too - it just seemed to be lacking flavor. I'm glad I made it, and it made for a nice meal, but it's not going to be a repeat with us. Love that emerald green color on yours!
ReplyDeleteYes - it needed something. I added leeks and pea shoots - but was still wanting a little more.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear your soup was drama free :-) Good luck finding your ham
It seemed a hint of spring, if that's what it means to be 'cheating on winter', but it didn't 'bloom'. Your 'Quicky' soup looked very appetizing, though!
ReplyDeleteWe actually enjoyed this soup…a nice fresh pea taste! That said, my husband still prefers my long simmered version with a ham bone. The pros of this soup was how quick and easy it was to prepare. Yours does look delicious!
ReplyDeleteI think its telling that not one Dorista skipped the bacon garnish. :) I used a very rich chicken stock so maybe that is why I thought no additional oomph was needed?
ReplyDeleteI've actually tried pea soup with a ham hock and this one worked out better for me. Taste-wise anyway. Yours looks much better than mine. Not sure what was wrong with me that night, I even bought creme fraiche and bacon and then completely forgot to use it.
ReplyDeleteMy expectations were pretty low since I am not a fan of peas. I liked this but will go for a thicker version next time. Dorie definitely inspired me to play around with more soups as this was truly easy and hard for me to rationalize not having time to knock out. Apologize for the late comment- I had too much fun running around seeing the Barefoot Contessa and cooking and ended up with a miserable cold (but it was worth it).
ReplyDeleteI added thyme and garlic to mine. I don't think I would have liked it as well if I hadn't.
