FFwD: Celery-Celery Soup

I so wanted to rave about this week's French Fridays with Dorie recipe: Celery-Celery Soup. I mean, I cooked this for dinner on Friday, so provided that I managed to blog about it by Saturday, I'd almost be participating in real time! Fancy that!

Unfortunately, I did not love this soup, which primarily consists of celery, celery root, and apples. After scanning through Dorie's soup section, I've come to a realization about my own tastes. I've adored the majority of her savory soups. I haven't enjoyed a single one that involve fruit. I just don't dig sweet soup. See that? I've learned something about myself.
Hideous.
Matt ate one bowl and said he didn't want another. Charlie actually ate most of a bowl, but it was only because I was dangling dessert over his head. All's fair in feeding kids.

I hate to say it, but we threw out the leftovers. We all knew they'd mold over in the fridge before any of us went back for seconds. Oh well.

  1. Sorry this one was a disappointment for you. It was actually a winner in my house. I loved the smooth consistency and earthy, slightly sweet taste. I made the apples and croutons (sans curry) for the second time I served it. Truly delicious! Happy “Dorista" Anniversary, Ei!

  2. Sorry it did not work for you. We enjoyed it, it was different with the apple in it, but I think
I had more onions than was needed so it covered up the sweetness. Happy Anniversary!

  4. How funny, half the time I cook and the posts don't make it up! And when they do I'm just happy that it happens the same weekend as a Friday :) Sorry you didn't like the soup better -

  5. I'm pretty hesistant to add sweet to savory dishes too. I liked this soup, but didn't love it. Glad you gave it a try.

  6. It wasn't very pretty either, was it? I thought it was ok, though it's not likely that I'll make it again. I made the croutons, which I think helped a lot. I also made a half-recipe. :)

  7. Half my household won't eat savory foods that have fruit. I don't mind them, but they aren't usually my favorites. Amazingly I really enjoyed this one. However, I think it's great to know what you do and don't like.

  8. I've had mixed reviews on the soup chapter of this book. Haven't quite gotten around to this one yet, also seems to have received mixed reviews from the group. We'll see how it goes over in my household.

  9. They can't all be winners. Don't worry I dangle dessert over my son's head too.

  10. We finished ours, but only after adding hot sauce. Maybe the curried croutons and apples would have made this one one more enjoyable. Oh well. On to the monkfish!

  11. It's good to know what's going to float your boat. I think one of the advantages of the diversity in this cookbook is that even the most experienced of cooks broaden their palates a little each week. And the rest of us learn so much.

  12. When it comes to children, bribery is totally an acceptable method of getting what you need done. my girls are 19 & 20 and there are times when I still resort to that method :-)
